things in life are the people we love, the places we’ve seen and experienced,
and the memories we’ve made along the way.’ You could also sum up by quoting
that renowned NY Yankee philosopher/catcher Yogi Berra who
observed: “The future ain’t what it used to be🤔”
Graduates
1959 - Matt Sanzone and son Robert participated in the 2025
Tunnel to Tower 5K run/ walk in NYC on September 28, 2025.
Matt Writes -
“The T/T 5K race and walk is an annual event (this year’s was the 24th)
intended to support the victims and their families resulting from the 9/11
attack in 2001. One of the victims was a young man whom I coached (wrestling
team) at Locust Valley High School in the early 1980s. His family, the Doyle
Family, sponsors a team (100 strong this year) from the Locust Valley and
Bayville communities to support the event. This year’s event had
approxinately 30,000 participants. It was the first time I participated. It
was an emotional and moving experience. I was fortunate that my son, Robert,
joined me in support. We were part of the 100-strong Doyle Team.”

That is Billy Joel
(Hicksville High School Class of 1967; graduated in 1992) and Steven Starr,
Wheatley 1975, Billy’s “CBS Records college representative.”
From Wikipedia - “[Billy]
Joel attended Hicksville High School until 1967 but did
not graduate with his class. He was playing at a piano bar to help support
himself, his mother and sister, and missed a crucial English exam after
playing a late-night gig the evening before. Although Joel was a
comparatively strong student, at the end of his senior year, he did not have
enough credits to graduate. Rather than attend summer school to earn his
diploma, Joel decided to begin a music career: “I told them, ‘To hell with
it. If I’m not going to Columbia University, I’m going to Columbia Records, and you don’t need a high
school diploma over there’.” In 1992, he submitted essays to the school board
in lieu of the missed exam. They were accepted, and he was awarded his
diploma at Hicksville High’s annual graduation ceremony 25 years after leaving.
Shirley Vogl Quarantello
(1967) Writes - “This photo was
taken at the Hicksville High School Class of 1967 20th-Year reunion. My
friends Sue and Vincent (whom I met when I was 18 y.o., almost 60 years ago),
classmates of Billy Joel, are laughing because Vincent was standing on a
stage, and Billy said “Hey, Vin, gimme a break, I’m not short enough????”
Joel left Hicksville High early with the crazy idea that he would make it big
in the music world 😊.”

The Wheatley School Alumni Association Website

phrase and, wow!, you’ll find every place it exists in all previous
Newsletters and other on-site material.
I edit all submissions,
even material in quotes, for clarity and concision, without any indication
thereof. I cannot and do not vouch for the accuracy of what people tell me,
as TWSAA does not have a New Yorker type fact-checking
department.
We welcome any and all
