Wheatley History
Matt Sanzone (1959) Writes - “With all due respect to Ed Brown (1958): the
Wheatley mascot and school colors were chosen by a vote of the entire school
body and not solely by the Class of ‘58.”
Art Engoron 1967) Writes
- “Ed and Matt could both be correct. The Class of 1958 could have nominated;
and the entire school could have voted to approve.”
Wheatley History Query
Can anyone else shed any
light on how the school colors and school mascot were chosen?
Attention ALL WHEATLEY Alumni!

Graduates
1958 - Allen Gordon - “I remember Matt Sanzone (1959) as Don
Kleban’s (1958) good buddy. I remember him well and fondly.
He had a younger brother Charles Sanzone (1963) and an
older brother with blond hair. Matt went on to become a school principal. I
remember his dad, who was wide and strong like Matt. My memory is very
intact. The short time together with the Classes of 1958 and 1959 were some
of the best days ever for me.”
1961 - Carol Jalonack Blum - “Mail was not delivered to homes in Old Westbury until
after my family had moved away. In the early 1960s, a new Post Office was
built where the house and general store had been. The house was moved back on
the property. If there was a special delivery letter, they would call from
the Post Office to let you know, so you could come and get it.
As for the Old Westbury
police coming to our house, it seems to me they came more than once. I
believe that my brother Ricky (1966) would have had
something to do with that.”
1966 (Tobi Eisenstein Soskin) - “Richard Jalonack- I remember
going to the post office to get the mail. The Long Island Expressway didn’t
exist then. Also, I remember your kind words about my dad’s bakery from a
while ago. Thanks for the memories.”

blast!
1970 - Luis Rios - I live in Raleigh North Carolina. In the 1960s, I was
a rebel. I didn’t even attend my high school graduation, which I totally
regret.

1968 (Ilene “Cookie” Levine) - “I hope that everyone at the luncheon has a great time!

the glue keeping our relationship with Wheatley together!”

The Usual Words of Wisdom
Thanks to our fabulous
Webmaster, Keith Aufhauser (Class of 1963), you can regale
yourself with the first 229 or so Wheatley School Alumni Association
Newsletters (and much other Wheatley data and arcana) at
Also thanks to Keith is
our search engine, prominently displayed on our home page: type in a word or
phrase and, wow!, you’ll find every place it exists in all previous
Newsletters and other on-site material.
I edit all submissions,
even material in quotes, for clarity and concision, without any indication
thereof. I cannot and do not vouch for the accuracy of what people tell me,
as TWSAA does not have a New Yorker type fact-checking
department.
We welcome any and all
text and photos relevant to The Wheatley School, 11 Bacon Road, Old Westbury,
NY 11568, and the people who administered, taught, worked, and/or studied
there. Art Engoron, Class of 1967
