CLASS OF 1960 REUNION

Ken Martin (1960) Writes - “HI ART, THE CLASS OF 1960 WILL ONCE AGAIN MEET FOR OUR ANNUAL ‘MINI’ REUNION. THIS TRADITION WAS STARTED AFTER OUR 50TH, WHICH WAS HELD AT THE WHEATLEY SCHOOL AND THE WHEATLEY HILLS GOLF CLUB. OUR LATE CLASS PRESIDENT, JACK LANGLOIS, WHO ATTENDED WHILE QUITE ILL, WAS SO IMPRESSED, HE LEFT US $5,000 TO HAVE ANOTHER REUNION THE NEXT YEAR. WE DID SO, AND THEN SOME. SINCE OUR 50TH, WE HAVE HAD 14 OF THESE MINIS (COVID KNOCKED OUT ONE YEAR).

THIS YEAR, WE WILL HOLD THE MINI AT DANFORDS HOTEL AND MARINA IN PORT JEFFERSON, NY, ON THE 17TH AND 18TH OF OCTOBER. THE EVENT INCLUDES A MEET AND GREET PARTY AT THE HOTEL ON FRIDAY NIGHT, JOHN MONCURE’S FAMOUS BLOODIES ON SATURDAY MORNING, PILING ON A BUS AFTERWARDS AND HEADING WEST TO THE EAST WILLISTON SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND THEN TOURING THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND STOPPING IN FRONT OF HOUSES OF THE CLASSMATES WHO ARE ON THE BUS. THE CLASSMATE WHOSE HOUSE IT IS WILL THEN DISCUSS MEMORIES OF HIS OR HER HOME BACK IN THE DAZE. ONCE THE HOUSE TOUR IS COMPLETED, WE WILL HAVE LUNCH AT HILDERBRANDT’S. THAT NIGHT, AFTER HEADING BACK EAST, WE PLAN TO DINE SOMEWHERE IN THE QUAINT VILLAGE OF PORT JEFFERSON, A TOWN KNOWN TO MANY OF US, AS WE HAD SOME MEMORABLE PARTIES ON THE SAND HILLS DUE EAST OF IT. SUNDAY MORNING WILL BE BREAKFAST AND FAREWELLS.

AS OF NOW, WE HAVE 18 PEOPLE SIGNED UP, AND WE WELCOME OTHER CLASSMATES AND FRIENDS TO ATTEND. IF INTERESTED, EMAIL KEN MARTIN AT KEN@LODGINGKIT.COM.

Rock & Roll in the Wheatley Gym - The Young Rascals

Howard Kirchick (1967) Writes - “I also remember the Rascals concert well. My recollection is that it was Helen Sparks’s (1967) father who was able to arrange the Rascals coming to Wheatley.”

Ken Gallard (1968) Writes - “Say Art...I love the piece about the Young Rascals concert. I certainly remember them playing in the gym. I was a big fan of theirs. When I was working at Carvel near the corner of Jericho Turnpike and Guinea Woods Road, they would occasionally come by for ice cream. I always got them their order for free (I think that the statute of limitations on free ice cream has passed by now). I would also see them at a guy named "Duchy's" place (I think that was his name) He ran a foreign car service shop on a side street across from the Sheridan Bowling Alley on Jericho Turnpike. With their new-found commercial success, some of them bought exotic, quirky European cars, which in those days frequently needed service.

The Rascals were "regular guys." Unfortunately, drummer Dino Danelli passed away a couple of years ago. The other members are still with us. Felix Cavaliere (keyboards/vocals) is the one who has remained the most active (as a member at times of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band--as well as other projects). The Rascals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a few years back. Cool deal that somebody from Wheatley still has that ticket. I still have my Woodstock tickets in mint condition.

All the best, Ken”

Bill Kirchick (1969) Writes - “Hey Art – If my memory serves me right (but as I am about to become 75, my memory is fading, and so I could be wrong) Hazel Spark’s (1969) sister Helen Sparks (1967) was instrumental in getting the Young Rascals to perform at the school. She had been a waitress at some bar at which they performed in their early years, and she had gotten to know them very well, or so I thought……….

Regards, bill k//”

George Meyer (1969) Writes - “Hi Art, With a big smile I read the story about the Rascals concert. I operated the follow spotlight that night. It was so much fun. In the late 1980's, I ran into Gene Cornish at the Howard Schwartz Recording Studio (where I worked for 30 years and had my own room). I asked him if he remembered that night, and he said that he did. He remembered it was a big crowd. The Rascals’ first album came out in March, as was their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Pretty amazing that we had such a big band play in our gym. Good memories.”

Jane Madison (1970) Writes to Karen Mannheim Fraller (1971) - Hi Karen, I remember the concert very well. Did we go together accompanied by two lads from Manhasset? It was my first concert, also.”

Art Engoron (1967) Writes - “The Young Rascals” became “The Rascals” in 1968, well after the Wheatley concert.

Three Sparks Sisters, who lived on Fox Hollow Lane, graduated from Wheatley: Helen (who now apparently goes by “Lynn [or Lyn] Scher”) (1967); Hazel (1969); and Florence (1975). I no longer have valid contact information for any of them, and I would appreciate any help finding them.

The hearsay that I heard is that Helen worked for some producer or manager close to the Young Rascals.”

Graduates

1963 - Louise Sobin - “Dear Art. Recently, I went to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. I sat next to a lovely couple at breakfast. The guy asked me where I was from. When I told told him, “Roslyn,” he told me that he went to Wheatley. Allen Gordon (1958) lived in Westwood Circle. We had a great time talking and reminiscing. I hope that he comes to visit me, and we can go on a memory trip.”

Lorraine Writes - “I love the photos! They bring back such great memories! And what a beautiful country we have. We were so innocent. And then the 1968 Democratic Convention took place, and the world changed.”

1967 - Someone - “Classmates Merrill Stanton and Lee Fein, and Lee’s wife, Sharon, all look great.”

1972 (Jackie Obrant Millstein) - “Hi Arthur, Recently I joined Lustre.net – a site created by two retired female NY attorneys as a way for other retired professional women to connect. They have periodic zooms where anyone is welcome who is a member. I hope that you have a good turnout at the upcoming luncheon. I’ll be out of the country, so I’ll have to wait for the next one. Best, Jackie”

1974 - Bob Berta - “Hey Art and Keith--I always find the Newsletter informative. Members of the alumni are always doing amazing things. I want to play lawn bowling, as described by Merrill Stanton, Class of 1967. And the memorabilia from the Young Rascals recalls for me great things that would happen at Wheatley. For example, the PEER program, in which instead of hiring substitutes, the school hired speakers. Amazing............/s/ Bob Berta (1974)”

Miscellaneous - Manhasset Apartment for Rent

Art Engoron (1967) writes - Sometime between a few months from now and July 1, 2026, I will be vacating the apartment in which I have been residing for 14 months, and it will be for rent. It’s on Plandome Road in Manhasset, a little north of Northern Blvd. It’s a second-floor walk-up (20 steps). There are two small bedrooms, a living room, a modern kitchen, and a private bathroom. It comes with a parking space. The neighborhood has everything you could want (restaurants, shopping, banks, a post-office……and pizzerias!). It’s quiet. It’s a four minute walk from the Manhasset LIRR station. The rent is $2,500 (IMHO, a good deal). The owners are a very sweet family. Please let me know if you are interested.
